Everybody who sells as part of their work will experience highs and lows.

It’s inevitable.

When things fall into place, and we win some business, it’s great! Sometimes, we win something that’s huge. And it’s absolutely brilliant and utterly memorable!! 🎉 🥳

Then there are the times when we’ve worked just as hard, and everything was looking totally positive. Something happened, and it didn’t go our way.

These are the times when it’s definitely NOT great! 😞

What is your strategy for coping with these ups and downs?

Strategies for living with the highs and lows in selling

I’m sure that you’ve already developed your own strategies for living with the ups and downs of selling. Here are some that I’ve found most useful, especially with the lows!

  1. Reliable Sales Process - Develop an increasingly reliable sales process that keeps you on track regardless of the highs and lows.

  2. Celebrate Small Wins - We all know that big wins are almost always the result of cumulative small wins. Take the time to celebrate the small wins along the way.

  3. Surplus Opportunities - Not everything will go as well as we hope. This is why we work hard to develop more opportunities than we need. It’s crucial to have a surplus of opportunities as a reserve to fall back on when things don’t go as expected.

  4. Become a Better Learner - The toughest challenges typically lead to the best learning. As far as you’re able, try to wring out everything you can from the tough situations to make you better next time.

  5. Enough Sleep - It’s impossible to maintain the mental health balance that is so necessary for effective selling without sufficient sleep.

  6. Accept the Inevitable - Simply understand that highs and lows are inevitable. It’s part of the job! This is a key foundation for growing resilience.
